How to use View GIF Frames

  1. 1. Upload the GIF. Drop in or browse for the animated GIF you want to lay out on a contact sheet. Every frame is decoded so it can be arranged into a single grid image.
  2. 2. Set the columns and sheet color. Choose Columns to control how many frames sit in each row, or leave it at 0 to pick a column count automatically. Set Sheet color for the space around each frame.
  3. 3. Download the contact sheet. Download the resulting PNG once it renders. Every frame of the animation now sits in its own cell on one image, ordered left to right, top to bottom.

When to use View GIF Frames

View GIF Frames lays every frame of an animated GIF out on a single contact sheet image, arranged into a grid. It gives you a way to see the entire animation at a glance instead of watching it play frame by frame. The layout happens locally in your browser.

  • Reviewing an animation for consistency. Checking whether an animated character or object stays consistent across every frame is much easier on a single contact sheet than by scrubbing through playback repeatedly.
  • Documenting an animation in a design spec. A design handoff document benefits from showing every frame of a proposed animation in one image, giving developers a static reference instead of just a looping GIF.
  • Spotting a glitch in one specific frame. A brief visual glitch that flashes by too quickly to catch during normal playback becomes obvious once every frame is laid out side by side on a contact sheet.

A PNG montage of every frame.

About the View GIF Frames tool

View GIF Frames does its work locally, right in the browser. Lay every frame of an animated GIF out on a single contact sheet. There is no upload step, no queue and no account, and your data never travels over the network.

It belongs to the GIF Tools collection on EditSafely, a set of 110 small, focused GIF utilities that share the same instant, private workspace.

You can shape the output with 2 settings, including Columns (0 = auto) and Sheet color, and the result refreshes the moment you change one. The finished file is put together in browser memory and saved with the Download button, so it never touches a server on the way to your disk. A worked example further down the page shows exactly what the tool produces for a real input.

Running locally also makes the tool fast and dependable: results appear as you type or drop a file, there is no server outage that can take it down mid-task, and confidential data can be processed without a second thought.
