How to use Find List Items
- 1. Paste your list. Add your items to the input pane, one per line. It can be anything from a column of usernames to a list of file paths you need to search.
- 2. Enter the text or pattern to find. Type the text you are looking for in Text or pattern to find. Turn on Treat the pattern as a regular expression for wildcard matching, and Case sensitive if letter case matters.
- 3. Read the matching items. The output pane lists only the items that matched your search. Copy the filtered result or adjust the pattern and options if you need a narrower or broader match.
When to use Find List Items
Find List Items searches a pasted list for items matching a piece of text or a regular expression. Use Find List Items whenever you need to isolate specific rows from a longer list instead of scanning it manually.
- Locating specific log lines. You pasted a chunk of application log lines and want to find only the ones mentioning a particular error code or hostname, without scrolling through hundreds of unrelated entries.
- Filtering a contact list by domain. A list of email addresses needs to be searched for everyone at a specific company domain, using a plain text match on the domain string.
- Searching filenames with a regular expression. A directory listing pasted as text needs to be searched for files matching a pattern like a date format or file extension, using the regular expression option.
- Doing a case-sensitive lookup. You need to distinguish between 'Admin' and 'admin' in a list of role names, so turning on case sensitivity keeps the search from matching both variants at once.

About the Find List Items tool
Find List Items runs as plain JavaScript in your browser tab, with no server behind it. Find certain items in a list. Whatever you put in stays on your device from start to finish.
The tool is part of EditSafely's List Tools section, 114 single-purpose utilities built around the same idea: open the page, get the result, keep your data to yourself.
You can shape the output with 3 settings, including Text or pattern to find, Treat the pattern as a regular expression and Case sensitive, and the result refreshes the moment you change one. A worked example further down the page shows exactly what the tool produces for a real input.
That local-first design has practical benefits beyond privacy. The tool keeps working on a flaky connection once the page has loaded, results are instant because nothing round-trips to a server, and it is safe to use with confidential material.
Frequently asked questions
Does Find List Items cost anything?
Yes, it is completely free. All 2,658 tools on EditSafely work without an account, a subscription or usage limits.
Is it safe to paste sensitive or confidential data?
No data leaves your device. The whole tool is JavaScript that runs inside your browser tab, so there is no upload, no server-side processing and no log of what you did. If you disconnect from the internet after the page loads, it keeps working.
How much text can I process at once?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on a shared server, the practical ceiling is your machine's memory, which comfortably handles inputs far larger than typical online tools allow.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
Nothing to install and no account needed. Open the page in any up-to-date browser, including on a phone or tablet, and the tool is ready.
How do I use the result?
The output panel has a one-click copy button, and you can keep refining the input while you work; the result updates in place as you type.
