How to use Skew List Items

  1. 1. Paste your list. Enter your items into the input pane, one per line. Any list you want visually staggered into a diagonal, staircase-like shape works here.
  2. 2. Set the spaces per step. Enter how many extra spaces to add before each successive item in Spaces per step. A larger value produces a steeper diagonal between consecutive lines.
  3. 3. Choose a skew direction. Pick Right so each line indents further than the one before it, or Left so each line indents less, changing which way the staircase leans.
  4. 4. Copy the skewed list. The output pane shows your items arranged in an increasingly indented staircase pattern. Copy the result into a plain text document or monospaced display.

When to use Skew List Items

Skew List Items indents each successive item a little more than the last, turning a plain vertical list into a diagonal staircase shape. Use it purely for the visual effect in plain text where actual diagram tools aren't available.

  • Making an ASCII-art style list for a text file. A plain text README or comment block calls for a decorative staircase-shaped list instead of a flat one, which skewing produces without any image editing.
  • Creating a visual effect in a chat message. A list of short phrases posted in a chat channel looks more playful arranged diagonally, and skewing achieves that with plain text and no image attachment needed.
  • Illustrating increasing depth or hierarchy visually. A sequence representing increasing levels of nesting or escalation benefits from a visual staircase shape, which skewing renders directly in plain monospaced text.
  • Experimenting with the direction and steepness of the stagger. You want the diagonal to lean the opposite way or be more pronounced, and adjusting the direction and the spaces per step lets you tune exactly how dramatic the stagger looks.

About the Skew List Items tool

Skew List Items runs as plain JavaScript in your browser tab, with no server behind it. Make a list go increasingly sideways. Whatever you put in stays on your device from start to finish.

The tool is part of EditSafely's List Tools section, 114 single-purpose utilities built around the same idea: open the page, get the result, keep your data to yourself.

You can shape the output with 2 settings, including Spaces per step and Skew direction, and the result refreshes the moment you change one. A worked example further down the page shows exactly what the tool produces for a real input.

That local-first design has practical benefits beyond privacy. The tool keeps working on a flaky connection once the page has loaded, results are instant because nothing round-trips to a server, and it is safe to use with confidential material.

Frequently asked questions

Is Skew List Items free to use?

Yes, it is completely free. All 2,658 tools on EditSafely work without an account, a subscription or usage limits.

Is it safe to paste sensitive or confidential data?

Everything happens locally. Your browser downloads the tool's code once, then does all the processing itself; nothing you enter is transmitted, stored or logged. You can even go offline after the page loads and it will still work.

How much text can I process at once?

There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on a shared server, the practical ceiling is your machine's memory, which comfortably handles inputs far larger than typical online tools allow.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. The tool works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. There is no account to create, no extension to add and no software to install.

How do I use the result?

The output panel has a one-click copy button, and you can keep refining the input while you work; the result updates in place as you type.
