How to use Pick a Number

  1. 1. Paste your candidate numbers. Enter the pool of numbers to choose from into the input pane, one per line or however your list is formatted.
  2. 2. Set how many to pick. Enter How many to pick to control the size of the random selection drawn from your list.
  3. 3. Decide on repetitions. Turn on Allow repetitions if the same number can be picked more than once, or leave it off to guarantee every pick is unique like drawing without replacement.
  4. 4. Copy the picks. Copy the randomly selected numbers into a raffle result, decision-making exercise or randomized test sample.

When to use Pick a Number

Pick a Number randomly selects one or more values from a list you provide, with or without repeats, standing in for a physical draw or dice roll. Use this tool whenever you need an unbiased random choice from a specific known set of numbers.

  • Running a small raffle or giveaway. A community giveaway has entrants assigned numbers 1 through 50, and picking three without repetitions selects the winners fairly without needing a physical drawing.
  • Randomly sampling rows for a spot check. A data quality review needs to spot-check a handful of row IDs from a larger dataset, so picking a random sample without repetitions gives an unbiased set to inspect manually.
  • Simulating repeated dice rolls. A probability demonstration wants to simulate rolling a six-sided die ten times, so picking from the numbers 1 through 6 with repetitions allowed mimics independent rolls.

About the Pick a Number tool

Pick a Number does its work locally, right in the browser. Quickly choose one or more numbers from a list of numbers. There is no upload step, no queue and no account, and your data never travels over the network.

It belongs to the Number Tools collection on EditSafely, a set of 194 small, focused Number utilities that share the same instant, private workspace.

You can shape the output with 2 settings, including How many to pick and Allow repetitions, and the result refreshes the moment you change one. 2 worked examples further down the page show exactly what the tool produces for real inputs.

Running locally also makes the tool fast and dependable: results appear as you type or drop a file, there is no server outage that can take it down mid-task, and confidential data can be processed without a second thought.

Frequently asked questions

Does Pick a Number cost anything?

Yes, it is completely free. All 2,658 tools on EditSafely work without an account, a subscription or usage limits.

Is it safe to paste sensitive or confidential data?

No data leaves your device. The whole tool is JavaScript that runs inside your browser tab, so there is no upload, no server-side processing and no log of what you did. If you disconnect from the internet after the page loads, it keeps working.

How much text can I process at once?

There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on a shared server, the practical ceiling is your machine's memory, which comfortably handles inputs far larger than typical online tools allow.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

Nothing to install and no account needed. Open the page in any up-to-date browser, including on a phone or tablet, and the tool is ready.

How do I use the result?

The output panel has a one-click copy button, and you can keep refining the input while you work; the result updates in place as you type.
