How to use Add Page Numbers

  1. 1. Load the PDF. Drop your document into the workspace. Page numbers get stamped across the whole document once you set the options.
  2. 2. Choose a position. Set Position to Bottom center, Bottom right, Top left, or one of the other corners, matching where readers expect to find the number.
  3. 3. Pick a number format. Choose Format as a plain number like 1, a labeled version like Page 1, or 1 of N to show the total page count alongside the current page.
  4. 4. Set the starting number, size, and download. Adjust Start at if numbering should not begin at 1, set Font size, then generate and download the numbered PDF.

When to use Add Page Numbers

Add Page Numbers stamps a customizable number onto every page of a PDF, in the position and format you choose. It replaces the manual work of numbering a document that was exported without pagination.

  • Numbering a thesis or long report. A thesis exported from a word processor lost its page numbers during a PDF conversion. Adding them back in the 1 of N format helps readers and examiners track their place.
  • Continuing numbers after merging documents. Two reports get combined into one PDF, but the numbering should continue from the first section into the second. Setting Start at to the right value keeps the sequence unbroken.
  • Matching a house style with page numbers in a corner. A company template always places page numbers in the bottom right corner. Applying that position consistently keeps every distributed document looking the same.

About the Add Page Numbers tool

Add Page Numbers runs as plain JavaScript in your browser tab, with no server behind it. Stamp customizable page numbers onto every page. Whatever you put in stays on your device from start to finish.

The tool is part of EditSafely's PDF Tools section, 92 single-purpose utilities built around the same idea: open the page, get the result, keep your data to yourself.

You can shape the output with 4 settings, including Position, Format, Start at and Font size, and the result refreshes the moment you change one. The finished file is put together in browser memory and saved with the Download button, so it never touches a server on the way to your disk.

That local-first design has practical benefits beyond privacy. The tool keeps working on a flaky connection once the page has loaded, results are instant because nothing round-trips to a server, and it is safe to use with confidential material.

Frequently asked questions

Is Add Page Numbers free to use?

Yes, it is completely free. All 2,658 tools on EditSafely work without an account, a subscription or usage limits.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

Everything happens locally. Your browser downloads the tool's code once, then does all the processing itself; nothing you enter is transmitted, stored or logged. You can even go offline after the page loads and it will still work.

Which files does Add Page Numbers accept?

It accepts PDF documents. There is no file size cap imposed by a server; very large files are limited only by your device's memory.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. The tool works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. There is no account to create, no extension to add and no software to install.

How do I save the output?

Click the Download button once the result is ready. The file is built in your browser's memory and handed straight to your downloads folder, without passing through a server.
