How to use Split a String
- 1. Paste the string. Enter the text you want broken apart into the input pane, such as a comma-separated line or a long block of characters. Split a String breaks it into pieces on the output.
- 2. Choose Separator or Chunk length. Set Split by to Separator to break on a specific character or substring you type into the Separator field, or to Chunk length to cut the string every fixed number of characters set in Chunk length.
- 3. Copy the resulting pieces. Copy the output, which lists each piece on its own line, ready to paste into a spreadsheet column or process one item at a time elsewhere.
When to use Split a String
Split a String breaks a single line of text into multiple pieces, either by a separator character you choose or by a fixed chunk length. Use it whenever you have delimited or fixed-width data that needs to become separate lines.
- Turning a CSV line into rows. You have one comma-separated line copied from a spreadsheet export and want each field on its own line to paste into a different tool or column.
- Breaking a long hash into fixed blocks. A long hexadecimal hash or key needs to be displayed in fixed-width groups, like every 4 characters, for readability. Chunk length mode handles that directly.
- Splitting a path on its separator. A file path or namespace string uses a slash or a dot as its separator, and you want each segment isolated to inspect or reorder individually.
- Preparing tokens for a batch script. A colon-separated environment variable value needs to be split into its individual entries so each one can be checked or processed one at a time.

About the Split a String tool
Split a String is a free online tool that works entirely inside your web browser. Break a string into pieces by length or by a separator. Because the processing happens on your own device, nothing you enter is uploaded, logged or stored anywhere.
This page is one of 159 String utilities on EditSafely. Each one does a single job well, and all of them follow the same rule: your input stays on your machine.
You can shape the output with 3 settings, including Split by, Separator and Chunk length, and the result refreshes the moment you change one. A worked example further down the page shows exactly what the tool produces for a real input.
Because nothing leaves your device, the tool is suitable for sensitive content such as internal documents, credentials or customer data. It also responds instantly, since every keystroke is handled on your own machine rather than by a remote API.
Frequently asked questions
Is Split a String free to use?
Yes, it is completely free. All 2,658 tools on EditSafely work without an account, a subscription or usage limits.
Is it safe to paste sensitive or confidential data?
Everything happens locally. Your browser downloads the tool's code once, then does all the processing itself; nothing you enter is transmitted, stored or logged. You can even go offline after the page loads and it will still work.
How much text can I process at once?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on a shared server, the practical ceiling is your machine's memory, which comfortably handles inputs far larger than typical online tools allow.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. The tool works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. There is no account to create, no extension to add and no software to install.
How do I use the result?
The output panel has a one-click copy button, and you can keep refining the input while you work; the result updates in place as you type.
