How to use Replace Vector Components

  1. 1. Paste your vectors. Enter one vector per line, for example (1, 0, 2, 0). Every matching component across every vector is checked for replacement, regardless of position.
  2. 2. Set the values to find and replace. Choose Find, the component value to search for, and Replace with, the value it becomes, useful for clearing a sentinel value or applying a targeted fix.
  3. 3. Choose the wrap style. Pick Parentheses, Brackets, or None for how each updated vector is displayed, matching the notation the rest of your work uses.
  4. 4. Copy the updated vectors. The output pane shows every vector with matching components swapped. Copy the result into your document, dataset, or further calculation.

When to use Replace Vector Components

Replace Vector Components finds every occurrence of one specific value across a list of vectors and swaps it for another. Use it to fix a repeated value or clear a placeholder without editing each vector individually.

  • Clearing a sentinel value from sensor data. A batch of vectors representing sensor readings uses -999 to mark an invalid reading, and you need every instance replaced with 0 before running the data through further calculations.
  • Fixing a repeated transcription error. You copied a set of coordinate vectors from a textbook and one specific value was consistently mistyped, and replacing it across the whole list fixes every affected vector at once.
  • Substituting a default value in test fixtures. A set of test vectors uses a placeholder value that needs to become a specific test constant before the fixtures can be used to validate a function's behavior.
  • Masking a specific value for an exercise. You want to hide a target value in a list of practice vectors by replacing it with a blank marker, creating a fill-in-the-value exercise for students.

About the Replace Vector Components tool

Replace Vector Components does its work locally, right in the browser. Swap specific values. There is no upload step, no queue and no account, and your data never travels over the network.

It belongs to the Math Tools collection on EditSafely, a set of 234 small, focused Math utilities that share the same instant, private workspace.

You can shape the output with 3 settings, including Find, Replace with and Wrap, and the result refreshes the moment you change one. A worked example further down the page shows exactly what the tool produces for a real input.

Running locally also makes the tool fast and dependable: results appear as you type or drop a file, there is no server outage that can take it down mid-task, and confidential data can be processed without a second thought.

Frequently asked questions

Does Replace Vector Components cost anything?

Yes, it is completely free. All 2,658 tools on EditSafely work without an account, a subscription or usage limits.

Is it safe to paste sensitive or confidential data?

No data leaves your device. The whole tool is JavaScript that runs inside your browser tab, so there is no upload, no server-side processing and no log of what you did. If you disconnect from the internet after the page loads, it keeps working.

How much text can I process at once?

There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your own device rather than on a shared server, the practical ceiling is your machine's memory, which comfortably handles inputs far larger than typical online tools allow.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

Nothing to install and no account needed. Open the page in any up-to-date browser, including on a phone or tablet, and the tool is ready.

How do I use the result?

The output panel has a one-click copy button, and you can keep refining the input while you work; the result updates in place as you type.
